Abstract

Vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer latex having a solids content of 45-60% wt., an ethylene content of 5-40% wt., an intrinsic viscosity of 1-2.5 dl/g. in benzene at 30 deg.C., and a particle size of 0.1-2 microns, is produced by aqs. emulsion polymsn. of vinyl acetate with ethylene in the presence of emulsifiers and water soluble catalysts, only a part of the total quantity of monomers being introduced into the reactor at the start of the polymsn., the remainder being added at one time during the course of polymsn. The copolymer latex dries in air to form films free of microgel unlike conventional vinyl acetate/ethylene latex. The latex is useful as a film-forming component for water-based paints, and as a finishing agent for textiles.
