Abstract
A polyvinyl ester emulsion is prepared by dispersing a vinyl ester in water containing a soluble starch derivative in solution therein in a proportion such that the starch derivative amounts to from 10 to 90 per cent of the total solids and heating the dispersion with the addition of a polymerization catalyst in an amount of from 1 1/2 to 10 per cent of the total solids but not less than 2 per cent or more than 25 per cent of the monomeric vinyl ester to effect polymerization. Vinyl acetate is the specified ester. Specified soluble starch derivatives are dextrin, acetylated starch, chlorinated starch, tapioca gum and farina gum, while specified catalysts are ammonium and sodium persulphates. The polyvinyl ester may be added in two stages. The pH of the emulsion may be adjusted after polymerization by neutralization in the presence of at least 1/2 per cent (preferably at least 1 per cent) of the total solids, of a dialdehyde, e.g. glyoxal, to a value of not more than 6.5.
