Abstract

Polymer emulsions and dispersions are prepared by polymerizing vinyl monomers with the aid of a water-soluble polymerization initiator in aqueous media containing colloids obtained by the enzyme degradation of natural starches, said colloids having Reducing Values of not more than 80 and being present in the proportion of 8 to 90 weight per cent of the vinyl monomer. The monomer may be vinyl acetate, higher vinyl esters or mixtures thereof, e.g. vinyl acetate and vinyl caprate, and mixtures of vinyl esters with alkyl maleates and fumarates, and acrylic, methacrylic crotonic and itaconic acids. The colloid may be prepared by the degradation of maize, waxy maize, farina, tapioca, wheat, rice, arrowroot, sorghum and waxy sorghum starches with enzymes such as a -amylase terminated by the addition of formic acid. The initiator may be a peroxide or persulphate, e.g. potassium persulphate, and other surface active agents may be present. The initiator and monomer may be added incrementally. Plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate and di-isobutyl phthalate, and dialdehydes, e.g. glyoxal and dialdehyde starch, may be added to the emulsions and dispersions, which may be used as adhesives and coating compositions. The preparation of colloids by the enzyme degradation of sorghum, waxy sorghum, maize and farina starches is described.
