Abstract
Pigmented coating compositions having a pigment volume concentration of 8-80% are prepared by (A) forming a mixture containing (1) water (2) one or two of the monomers, methacrylic esters of saturated aliphatic monhydroxy alcohols having one to four carbon atoms, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, styrene and butadiene or one or two of the monomers acrylic or methacrylic esters of saturated aliphatic monohydroxy alcohols having one to four carbon atoms, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride, and vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids of two to four carbon atoms or a copolymer of one of the monomers from the second group with one of the monomers vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids of five to eight carbon atoms, acrylic or methacrylic esters of saturated aliphatic monohydroxy alcohols of five to ten carbon atoms and maleic or fumaric diesters of saturated aliphatic monohydroxy alcohols of one to ten carbon atoms, (3) an aqueous pigment dispersion, (4) a wetting agent, (5) a protective colloid, (6) a water-soluble salt of persulphuric acid, (7) at least one water-soluble compound of the group consisting of salts of oxyacids of sulphur and addition compounds thereof with an aldehyde, (8) a water soluble iron salt and (9) a sequestering agent, identical with or compatible with the wetting agent, capable of forming a complex with iron cations (B) agitating the mixture at below its refluxing temperature while polymerization occurs, and (C) adjusting the proportion of monomer in the mixture to form an aqueous pigmented coating composition having a pigment volume concentration of between 8 and 80%. The polymerizable constituent may be added in two portions, the second portion ranging between 70/30 and 30/70 of the first portion by weight, at temperatures below the refluxing temperature of the mixture. The oxidizing and the reducing agent may be added in two portions, the second portion being added after all of the polymerizable constituent has been added. Specified monomers and mixtures used in the examples are vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, butyl acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, vinylacetate mixed with butyl or decyl acrylate, or dibutyl fumarate or vinyl propionate or vinyl-2-ethyl-hexoate, or vinylidene chloride, styrene-butadiene, and butyl acrylate-vinylidene chloride. The wetting agent may be the condensation product of ethylene oxide with the reaction product of propylene oxide and propylene glycol, the protective colloid may be hydroxyethyl cellulose, and the catalyst system comprises potassium persulphate, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, sodium pyrophosphate (sequestering agent) and either ferrous sulphate or ferric chloride. Other sequestering agents are sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium silicate. Specified pigments are titanium dioxide, iron oxides, lithopone, zinc sulphide and calcium extended titanium pigments.
