Abstract

An aqueous composition having film-forming properties comprises an aqueous emulsion of a polymer in admixture with a pyrollidone compound of the formula <FORM:0910997/IV(a)/1> in which A is NH, N-CH=CH2 or an N-alkyl group, the final composition containing between 67 and 0,1% by weight of the pyrrolidone compound based on the combined weights of the compound and polymer solids. Polymers specified are polystyrene, polymers of acrylic and methacrylic esters and copolymers of styrene and acrylic esters with one another or with minor amounts of other monomers, e.g. acrylic and methacrylic acids. Pyrrolidone compounds are 2-pyrrolidone and its N-methyl, -ethyl, -isopropyl and -vinyl derivatives. Also present in the compositions may be plasticizers, such as dibutyl and dioctyl phthalates and esters of adipic and sebacic acids, oxidized microcrystalline waxes, oxidized polyethylenes, alkali soluble resins and colloidal silica.
