Abstract

888,251. Adhesive bandages. SCHOLL MFG. CO. Ltd. Feb. 27, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957], No. 6393/58. Class 81 (2). An adhesive bandage comprises a thermoplastic film backing 1 and a thermoplastic foam pad 2 secured by a heat-sealed seam 3 to the backing which carries pressure-sensitive adhesive 5 on portions extending beyond the pad. A pad 2 of thermoplastic foam material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride foam is secured to a thermoplastic film backing strip 1, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or cellulose acetate film, by heat seals 3 along two opposite side edges or all its edges. Pressure-sensitive adhesive 5 coats exposed parts of the backing strip 1 on each side of the pad 2, no adhesive being present beneath the pad. Removable facing strips 6, 7 of cineoline or acetate film overlie the pad 2 and the adhesive 5. Perforations 8 in the backing overlying the pad 2 may extend through the pad. Such bandages are made by laying a strip of pad material along the middle of a strip of backing material which is appropriately spread with adhesive, securing the pad material to the backing material by heat seals along the side edges of the pad material strip and cutting the composite strip so formed transversely to form individual dressings. The pad material strip may also be heat-sealed to the backing along lines transversely of the strip, these transverse heat seals being cut through to form dressings in which the pad is sealed to the backing along all its edges.
