Abstract
Quaternary salts of the general formula <FORM:0886269/IV (b)/1> wherein Z completes a heterocyclic ring, X is an anion and R is an alkyl or aralkyl group substituted with a water-solubilizing group such as COOH, SO3H and PO3H2, and including such salts wherein X is absent and R forms an internal salt with the nitrogen atom, are prepared by reacting the base with a quaternising agent RX. Examples are given of the reaction of b -chloro-n-butyric acid with a -picoline, of p-carboxy-benzyl bromide with a -picoline, 5,6-dichloro - 3 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - benzimidazole, 2-methyl-benzselenazole, or 2-methyl-benzoxazole, and of butane sultone with 5,6-dichloro3 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - benzimidazole or 2,5,6 - trimethyl-benzthiazole to give internal salts. 5, 6 - Dichloro - 3 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - benz - imidazole is prepared by refluxing 2-ethylamino-4,5-dichloroanilin in aqueous HCl and acetic acid.
