Abstract

The invention comprises new compounds of Formula I wherein X is NH and the preparation of compounds I <FORM:1073299/C2/1> wherein X is O or NH, R1 is R3-pyridyl-CH2 -(R3 being hydrogen or C1- 4 alkyl), and R2\t is phenyl optionally substituted by one or more halogen, hydroxy or C1- 4 alkyl or alkoxy substituents, C5- 4 cycloalkyl, aralkyl or C3- 7 alkyl, and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, by reacting with R1Y or an acid addition salt thereof (Y being Cl, Br, I or alkyl or aryl sulphonate) an adsorbate on a strongly basic anion exchange material of a corresponding 5-R2-barbituric acid, and optionally hydro lysing products wherein X is NH to the keto compounds, an optional further step comprising reducing 5 - pyridylmethyl - 5 - R2 - oxobar bituric acid products to 5-piperidinylmethyl -5-R2-oxobarturic acids which can then be N-methylated.
