Abstract
Quaternary salt of the general formula:-<FORM:0873937/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an alkyl, allyl or halogen-substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group and X is an anion, the quaternized pyridinium ring being joined to the vinyl group in 2- or 4-position, are prepared by reacting the corresponding bases with salts of the formula RX. Examples are given of the reaction of 1:2-dipyridylethylenes with benzyl chloride, benzyl bromide, p-chlorobenzyl chloride, methyl iodide, ethyl iodide, allyl bromide or ethyl toluene p-sulphonate.
