Abstract

Anhydro - 4;5 - dichloro-3-ethyl-2-methyl-1-(4-sulphobutyl)-benzimidazolium hydroxide is prepared by heating together 6;7-dichloro-1-ethyl-2-methylbenzimidazole and 1,4-butane sultone. 5;6-Dichloro-N-ethyl-2-nitro-aniline is prepared by adding 2,3,4-trichloro-nitrobenzene in small portions to a solution of ethylamine in water. The product is reduced with iron powder and conc. hydrochloric acid to the corresponding amine. Addition of acetic anhydride to this amine, with shaking, yields 6,7-dichloro-1-ethyl-2-methyl-benzimidazole. This base is then quaternized by heating with b -iodo-propionic acid. 5,6-Dichloro-1-ethyl-2-methyl-benzimidazole is similarly quaternized with 4-bromovaleric acid. Specifications 466,269, 524,154, 524,554, 524,555, 532,735, 541,589, 561,172, 581,772, 754,546 and 871,936 are referred to.ALSO: 1;11- Di(b -carboxyethyl)- 4;41;5; 51-tetrachloro-3;31- diethylbenzimidazolocarbocyanine iodide is prepared by refluxing the quaternary salt from 6;7-dichloro-1-ethyl-2-methyl-benzimidazole and b -iodopropionic acid with chloral in the presence of sodium ethoxide. 1;11- Di(4-carboxybutyl)- 5;51;6;61 tetrachloro-3;31- diethylbenzimidazolocarbocyanine iodide is prepared by refluxing the quaternary salt from 5;6-dichloro-1-ethyl-2-methyl-benzimidazole and 4-bromovaleric acid with chloral in the presence of sodium ethoxide, and suspending the product in aqueous sodium iodide. Anhydro- 4;41;5;51-tetrachlor- 3;31-diethyl-1; 11- di(4-sulphobutyl) benzimidazolocarbocyanine hydroxide is prepared by refluxing anhydro-4;5- dichloro-3-ethyl- 2-methyl-1-(4-sulphobutyl) -benzimidazolium hydroxide with chloral in the presence of sodium ethoxide.
