Abstract

The Specification describes dyes of the general formula <FORM:1062024/C4-C5/1> wherein R2 is an alkyl or sulpho-alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, R3 is an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, n is 2 or 3, Z completes a fused-on benzene or naphthalene nucleus and X1 is an anion, and the anhydro form of such dyes. In examples, the dyes are prepared by condensing 2 - b - acetanilidovinyl - 3 - ethyl - benzoxazolium iodide with 3-ethyl-1,2 - trimethylenenaphth [2,3-d]- or [1,2-d]-imidazolium iodide or p-toluene sulphonate, 3-ethyl-1,2-tetramethylene - naphth [2,3-d]-imidazolium-p-toluene sulphonate, anhydro-3-(3-sulphobutyl)-1,2 - trimethylene - naphth [2,3-d]-imidazolium hydroxide or 5,6-dichloro-3-ethyl-1,2-trimethylene-benzimidazoliu iodide. Anhydro - 1,11 - di - (b - carboxyethyl) - 5,51, 6,61 - tetrachloro - 3,31 - diethyl - benzimidazolo-carbocyanine hydroxide is prepared by heating 5,6 - dichloro - 1 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - benzimidazole with b -iodopropionic acid, dissolving the product in sodium alcoholate and reacting it with trichloro-1-ethoxyethanol.
