Abstract
Merocyanine dyes of the general formula <FORM:0834751/IV(c)/1> wherein R, R1 and R2 represent alkyl groups, X is -OH or -NH2, n is 0 or 1, m is 1 or 2, and Z completes a 5- or 6-membered nucleus, are prepared by reacting a quaternary salt of the formula <FORM:0834751/IV(c)/2> or an acyl derivative thereof (Y represents an anion), with a 2-dialkylamino-4-hydroxy-6-amino (or hydroxy) pyrimidine. Alternatively, dyes wherein m is 1 may be prepared by reacting a cyclammonium quaternary salt having a 2-(or 4-) aldehydo-methylene group with the above pyrimidine, or by reacting a cyclammonium quaternary salt having a 2- (or 4-) methyl group with ethyl orthoformate and the above pyrimidine. Examples are given of dyes wherein Z completes a benzthiazole, indoline or quinoline nucleus, R is methyl or ethyl, and R1 and R2 are methyl groups.
