Abstract

Anhydro - 5 - phenyl - 3 - b - carboxyethyl - 2 - (b - anilino - b - ethylvinyl) benzoxazolium hydroxide is prepared by heating 2-methyl-5-phenyl-benzoxazole with b -bromopropionic acid to give anhydro - 5 - phenyl - 3 - b - carboxyethyl - 2 - methyl - benzoxazolium hydroxide, which is then heated with S-ethyl-iso-thiopropionanilide. By using g -bromo-butyric acid, anhydro - 5 - phenyl - 3 - g - carboxypropyl - 2 - (b - anilino - b - ethylvinyl) benzoxazolium hydroxide is obtained.ALSO:Carbocyanine dyes of the general formula: <FORM:0841119/IV (c)/1> wherein A1 and A2 are methyl or ethyl groups, X is an anion and n is 1, 2 or 3, are prepared by reacting an N-methyl or N-ethyl quaternary salt of 2-methyl-5-phenyl-benzoxazole with an anil of the formula: <FORM:0841119/IV (c)/2> According to the Provisional Specification the dyes may have the formula: <FORM:0841119/IV (c)/3> wherein A1 and A4 are alkyl groups, A2 and A3 are H, halogen or alkyl, alkoxy or aryl groups or together form a fused-on benzene ring, A5 is carboxyalkyl, Y completes an oxazole, benzoxazole, thiazoline or thiadiazole nucleus and X is an anion.
