Abstract
Dyes having one of the general formulae <FORM:0899917/IV (c)/1> <FORM:0899917/IV (c)/2> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or phenol groups, R3 and R4 are alkyl groups, R5 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, D1 and D2 complete heterocyclic nuclei, n is 0 or 1 and X is an anion, are prepared by condensing a quaternary derivative of a compound of formula <FORM:0899917/IV (c)/3> with a cyclammonium quaternary salt having a reactive a - or g -alkylthio group, or with a compound of formula <FORM:0899917/IV (c)/4> wherein R6 is an alkyl group. Examples of dyes are given wherein D1 completes a benzthiazole, benzoxazole, naphthothiazole or 2-quinoline nucleus, R1 and R2 are hydrogen or phenyl, and D2 completes a 3-ethyl-rhodanine residue. The general formulae in the Provisional Specification are broader than those in the Complete Specification, but some of this matter has been divided out in Application 43890/60.
