Abstract
Dyes having one of the general formulae <FORM:0966865/C4-C5/1> <FORM:0966865/C4-C5/2> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, R3 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, D1 and D2 complete 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic rings, D3 completes a ketomethylene ring, n is 0 or 1 and X is an anion, are prepared by condensing a quaternary derivative of a compound of formula <FORM:0966865/C4-C5/3> with a cyclammonium quaternary salt having a reactive a - or g -methyl group, or with a heterocyclic nitrogen ketomethylene compound. Examples of dyes are given wherein D1 and D2 complete benzthiazole, benzoxazole, 1: 3: 3-trimethyl-indolenine o 2-quinoline nuclei, and D3 is the residue of 3-ethyl-rhodanine. The compounds of formula III are prepared by treating the corresponding ketomethylene compound with phosphorus pentasulphide, the ketomethylene compound being obtained by reacting 2,3-dihydro - 2 - oxo - benzofuran with a compound of the formula <FORM:0966865/C4-C5/4> wherein Q is a thioether or acetanilido group.
