Abstract

Merocyanine dyes of the general formula:- <FORM:0569532/IV(c)/1> wherein R is an alkyl, aralkyl, allyl or substituted alkyl group, R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl, n is 0 or 1, Z completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus and d is 0 or 1, or, when R1 is hydrogen, d may be 2, are prepared by reacting a quaternary cyclammonium salt having a reactive a - or g - -SR2, -CH=CR1-SR2 or -(CH=CH)d-NR3R4 group (R2=alkyl or aryl, R3=acyl and R4=aryl) with 7-methylimidazo [1; 2-a ] pyridin 2-one. By reacting the merocyanine dye produced with a second molecule of the same or a different quaternary cyclammonium salt, complex merocyanine dyes are formed having the general formula:- <FORM:0569532/IV(c)/2> wherein R6, R5, Z1, m and q have the value given for R, R1, Z, d and n respectively. The dyes may be in the form of their addition salts with inorganic acids such as hydrogen iodide, hydrochloric or phosphoric acids. Examples are given of the preparations of merocyanine dyes wherein Z completes a thiazoline, benzthiazole or benzoxazole nucleus, and of the conversion of these into complex merocyanine dyes wherein Z1 completes a benzthiazole or benzoxazole nucleus.
