Abstract

Dyes of the general formula <FORM:0789077/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an alkyl group, n is 0 or 1, D and Z complete heterocyclic nitrogen rings and A is the group <FORM:0789077/IV (b)/2> where R1 is alkyl, n1 is 0 or 1, X is an anion, D1 completes a heterocyclic nucleus, and P and Q are both NC- or together complete a heterocyclic ketomethylene ring, are prepared by reacting a quaternary salt of the formula <FORM:0789077/IV (b)/3> wherein R11 is alkyl or aralkyl and X1 is an anion, with a compound AH2. The quaternary salt intermediates are obtained by treating the compounds described in Specification 788,901 with a salt R11X1. In the examples, D completes a benzthiazole, benzoxazole or benzselenazole nucleus, Z completes a 3-ethyl-thiazoline-2-one, 3-ethyl-2-ethylimino-thiazoline, 3-ethyl-oxazoline-2-one, 1-phenyl-2 : 3-dimethylpyrazole or 2-phenyl-3-methyl-oxazole nucleus and A is =C(CN)2, the residue of an allylrhodanine or ethylrhodanine nucleus, 2-methylidene - 3 - ethyl - 4:5 - diphenyl thiazole or 2-methylidene-3-ethyl-benzthiazole. According to the Provisional Specification, the dyes may have the general formula <FORM:0789077/IV (b)/4> wherein m and p are 0 or positive integers, L and M are H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, a heterocyclic nucleus of the formula <FORM:0789077/IV (b)/5> (D1 completes a heterocyclic nucleus, R1=alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or alkylene, substituted or not, n1 is 0 or 1, and m1 is 0 or a positive integer) or YR11 (R11=alkyl, aralkyl or aryl and Y=O,S or Se), R may be alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or alkylene, substituted or not, and A is as defined above except that P and Q may be any electro-negative functions.
