Abstract

1,125,683. Aao dyes containing cyano groups. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 17 Feb., 1967 [17 Feb., 1966; 12 Jan., 1967], No. 7722/67. Heading C4P. Azo dyes containing cyano groups are obtained by reacting an azo dye of the formula X-A-N=N-K wherein A is an aromatic-carbocyclic radical, X is a halogen in an o-position to the azo group, and K is the radical of a coupling component, with a metal cyanide in an organic medium with the exchange of the halogen substituent X for a CN substituent. The invention also comprises azo dyes of the formula wherein Y, is a group NO 2 , CN, CF 3 , R 1 , OR 1 , wherein R 1 is an optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical, R 2 and R 3 are H or substituents which together may also form part of a heterocyclic ring, R 4 is H, OH, R 1 , OR 1 , or NR 2 R 3 , R 9 is an acyl group, and R 10 is H, an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical or the group R 9 ; R 0 and R 10 may together also form part of a heterocyclic ring, and Z 1 is H or a substituent. These dyes may be obtained by the above process. Examples are given for the preparation of the dyes. They are useful for dyeing hydrophobic materials.
