Abstract

542,502. 3-Pyrazolidones. KENDALL, J. D. July 10, 1940, No. 11465. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] A developing agent for reducible silver salt images is a 3-pyrazolidone of the general formula where R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon groups, such as alkyl, for example methyl; ethyl, propyl, or isopropyl; aryl, such as phenyl or naphthyl; aralkyl, for example benzyl; and aryl groups substituted with hydroxy, alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl, amino, substituted amino, nitro, sulphonic, or carboxylic groups, or halogen atoms. Specific developing agents are 3-pyrazolidone, 5-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone, 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone, 1-phenyl-5-methyl-3-pyrazolidone, 1-pchlorophenyl-3-pyrazolidone and I-p-tolyl-3- pyrazolidone. The compounds may be prepared where Rl is hydrogen by condensing hydrazine hydrate with α : #-olefine-carboxylic acid of the general formula R3-CH =CR2-COOH, and where Rl is a hydrocarbon group by condensing the corresponding hydrocarbon-substituted hydrazine with #-halogen-substituted fatty acid of the general formula R 3 -CHX-CHR 2 -COOH, X being halogen, such as chlorine, bromine, or iodine.
