Abstract

637,847. Photographic silver chlorobromide emulsions. KENDALL, J. D., FRY, D. J., and ILFORD, Ltd. May 8, 1948, No. 12697. [Class 98 (ii)] A silver chlorobromide emulsion which yields images of brown-black tone on normal development contains 4-hydroxyquinoline or a derivative thereof containing as nuclear substituents alkyl, acyl, carboxy, or carbalkoxy groups. The compound may have the general formula wherein at least three of the substituents R 1 to R 6 are hydrogen atoms and the remaining are alkyl, acyl, carboxy, or carbalkoxy groups, but not more than one is an acyl, carboxy, or carbalkoxy group. Compounds specified are 4-hydroxyquinoline, 4-hydroxy-8-methylquinoline, 4-hydroxy-6-methylquinoline, 3-acetyl-4- hydroxyquinoline, 4-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid, and 2-methyl-4-hydroxyquinoline. More than one of the compounds may be used. The emulsion may be washed or .unwashed. Specification 563,498 is referred to.
