Class 146(3) In a fountain pen wherein the nib is held between an inner feed bar and an outer sleevelike member surrounding the inner feed bar, the air which flows back to the ink reservoir to replace the used ink passes in series first along a bottom forward longitudinal air intake groove in the periphery of the feed bar, then along a transverse connecting air passage in the feed bar, and then along a top rear longitudinal air groove in the periphery of the feed bar, the top rear longitudinal air groove being angularly displaced about the periphery of the feed bar with respect to the bottom forward longitudinal air groove. As shown the feed bar 1 is formed with a deep, narrow ink groove 11 which intersects a plurality of circumferential ink overflow chambers 10 cut in the feed bar and also a circumferential groove 8 and which terminates at its forward end adjacent to the underside of the nib 3. The nib 3 is arcuate in cross-section and is wedged between the feed bar 1 and nib-section 2 in an arcuate recess 9 in the latter. At the rear end of the nib inturned lugs 7 engage in the groove 8 in the feed bar to prevent relative longitudinal movement between the nib and feed bar. An air passage 12 overlies the ink groove 11 and is wider and shallower than the latter. The passage 12 extends from the rear end of the feed bar and opens into the rearmost overflow chamber 10a. An air intake groove 13 extends from the front end of the feed bar, intersects the chambers 10 and opens into the chamber 10a. Air is fed to the reservoir 4 via the groove 13, chamber 10a and passage 12. When the chambers 10, 10a are filled with surplus ink the groove 13 is blocked and air cannot get to the reservoir which prevents escape of more ink therefrom until the overflow chambers have been emptied either by writing or draining back into the reservoir. In a modification the groove 13 and passage 12 are connected by a hole passing diametrically through the feed bar. Specification 885,375 is referred to.
