Abstract
546,679. Fountain pens. EVERSHARP, Inc. March 26, 1941, No. 4085. Convention date, July 1, 1940. [Class 146 (iii)] The feed-bar has an ink-feed passage in its upper surface, and a pocket 34, Fig. 2, in its underside for accommodating overflow ink conducted to it by slots from the upper forward portion of the feedbar. The slots are out of communication with the ink-feed passage, and the pocket has a restricted path of communication with the reservoir to lead excess ink back thereto when the pen is inverted. The bar is formed with ink-feed grooves 18, Fig. 5, on either side of a rib 19. The rib has a narrow kerf 20, Fig. 2, terminating short of the top of the bar, and is formed with a depression 19a, beyond which the top of the rib approaches the upper surface of the feed-bar, so as to leave a restricted air passage 23 to the reservoir. A second air passage is formed by a bore 21 communicating with a tube 24, which extends into the barrel and is formed with a curved leader-strip 25. In the sides of the feed-bar are formed upper and lower overflow recesses 28, 28, Fig. 1, which terminate within the barrel and are connected by passages 29a, 29b. The underside of the bar has grooves 30 separated by a wall 31, which is cut away to form the pocket 34. Diagonal slots 36 lead from the top of the feed-bar to the grooves 30. The forward end of the barrel has a gutter 37 and grooves 17, which surround the feed-bar. The rear end of the reed-bar fits closely within the end of the barrel, except for narrow crevices 16, Fig. 5, formed between it and the wall of the barrel by the lower margins of the nib, these crevices being in communication with the grooves 17. Excess ink can enter the recesses 26 owing to the flexing of the nib in writing, and may enter the diagonal slots 36, from which it can pass to the grooves 30 and the pocket 34. When the pen is inverted, the excess ink drain into the grooves 17 and through the crevices 16 to the reservoir.
