Abstract
948,431. Reservoir pens. MENTMORE MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Jan. 4, 1960 [Oct. 3, 1958], No. 31708/58. Heading B6P. In a fountain pen of the kind in which capillary action alone is utilized for filling the ink reservoir means is provided separately from the normal ink-feeding means which conveys ink from the reservoir to the nib for maintaining a body of ink in contact with the nib slit. The pen barrel 1 is partially filled with a stack of discs 3 cut from a knitted nylon fabric and the nib section 2 is filled with a spiral roll 4 of the same fabric. The barrel is vented at 7 to the rear of the discs 3. The nib 9 and a supporting member 11 therefor are assembled before being inserted in the nib section 2. Notches 9a at the sides of the nib engage lateral lugs 11e on the member 11 so as to prevent relative longitudinal movement between these parts. The nib and member 11 fit into a non-circular bore at the front end of the nib section, Fig. 8, and are located by an abutment 10c therein. The member 11 is recessed on its underside at 11c so as to allow access of ink to the fabric 4 in the filling operation. The member is also recessed adjacent to the nib at 11f, this recess being filled with a capillary element 12 which may be thick filter paper or a wick formed from braided nylon fibres. A wick 8 of braided nylon fibres is interposed between the roll 4 and the inner wall of the nib section and extends at the rear round the end of the roll 4, so as to be in close contact with the discs 3, and at the front over the top of the nib 9 to a point adjacent to the tip thereof. The pen is filled by capillary action when the writing end is immersed in ink and at the same time the element 12 becomes saturated with ink. The ink in the element 12 and the wick 8, both of which lie adjacent to the nib slit 9b at their front ends, keeps the slit moist and prevents the ink therein from drying out when the nib is exposed but not in use.
