WRITING INSTRUMENT Filed May ll, 1949 I N V EN TOR. 620476 /ZZZ'dZfld, J 7
ATTU R N EYE Patented May 30, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRITING INSTRUMENT George Niizawa, Chicago, 111.
Application May 11, 1949, Serial No. 92,660
This invention relates to a writing instrument, and more particularly to a fountain pen type writing instrument.
The object of the invention is to provide a writing instrument which includes a socket for receiving therein the users index finger, the writing instrument being provided with a ball pointed ink cartridge whereby the amount of ink emitted is controlled by the pressure applied to the instrument.
Another object of the invention is to provide a writing instrument which includes a socket that is adapted to receive the users index finger therein, whereby danger of losing or misplacing the instrument is minimized.
A further object of the invention is to provide a writing instrument which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thi application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the writing instrument, according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the instrument;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the instrument, with the body member being shown in section; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the writing instrument in use.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral l designates a body member which may be fabricated of any suitable material. The body member is provided with an open ended socket or stall II for receiving therein the user's index finger, F.
The body member ID is provided with a shoulder or ridge 12 which extends longitudinally along the bottom of the body member [0. The body member ID is provided with a recess 13 which extends from the front end thereof. Carried by the body member ID is a ball pointed ink cartridge l4 which includes a casing or cartridge l for holding ink therein. The casing 15 seats snugly in the recess 13 in the body member ID. The cartridge 15 further includes a head It 1 Claim. (01. 120-42.4)
which carries a movable ball I! and a spring l8 normally urges the ball I1 to its closed position so that flow of ink through the head 16 is normally prevented.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that a writing instrument has been provided which includes a body member I!) which has a socket ll therein for receiving the users index finger F :as shown in Figures 4 and 5. To use the instrument, the device is held as shown in Figures 4 and 5, and upon application of pressure to the ball I! ink flows from the casing l5 and out through the head 16, whereby a continuous flow of ink is insured to the writing paper. The writing instrument is easily slipped onto the index finger F, and the instrument may be left on the finger while other tasks are being performed, so that danger of losing the instrument is minimized. The cost of manufacturing this writing instrument is obviously less than the cost required for manufacturing a conventional fountain pen.
What I claim is:
A writing instrument comprising a body member having a bottom, said body member being provided with an arcuate closed end and having its other end open, the open end of said body member being arranged in communication with a socket, an enlarged ridge extending longitudinally along the bottom of said body member, said ridge having a recess extending ther-ethrough, said recess being substantially straight longitudinally and having its front end open, the front open end of said recess terminating in the closed end of said body member, the other end of said recess being closed and terminating adjiacent the rear end of said body member, a hollow elongated ink-holding casing snugly seated in said recess, a head arranged exteriorly of said recess and connected to said casing, and a springpressed ball located in said head.
