Abstract
1,007,424. Reservoir pens. PARKER PEN CO. Dec. 1, 1961 [Dec. 7, 1960 (3)], No. 43085/61. Heading B6P. A fountain pen of the type having a reciprocating piston self-filling reservoir, Fig. 16; or a replaceable cartridge reservoir, Fig. 15 (not shown), comprises an ink overflow collector in the form of an annular chamber 77 between the outer wall of a hollow generally cylindrical plug 36 and the inner wall of the hollow forward barrel portion 23 of the pen. The plug 36 is mounted on or is integral with means 37 that includes a rearwardly-projecting tubular connector 41 on which the ink reservoir 21 is mounted. A feed bar 33, Figs. 4 and 5, extends from the nib 34 through the plug 36, and into the tubular connector 41, and comprises one capillary groove 51 running from the reservoir to a capillary annular control chamber 56 formed between the wall of the plug 36 and the surface of the feed bar, and two side-by-side capillary grooves 53, 54 running from the control chamber 56 to the nib 34. A non- capillary air channel 61 is provided on the underside of the feed bar allowing air into the control chamber 56. A radial slot 78 of capillary dimensions in the plug 36 connects the control chamber 56 to the overflow chamber 77. Air passes from the central chamber 56 through a wider part 60 of the capillary groove 51 to the reservoir. The plug 36 has at its forward end a counter bore 84 which communicates between the air channel 61 and an air slot 80 in the plug, diametrically opposite the radial slot 78. This allows the feed bar 33 to have any orientation with respect to the plug 36. The nib 34 and the feed bar 33 are mounted in a follow collar member 30 screwed into the forward barrel portion of the pen. An upstanding protuberance 70 spaces the nib from the surface of the feed bar. The nib 34 is semi-conical, tapering to a writing point, and is stepped-down intermediate its ends to provide a rearwardly facing shoulder. The radial slot 78 has greater capillary strength than the control chamber 56, so that the slot 78 and an annular V-groove 82 of the overflow chamber 77 are normally filled with ink. The capillary force exerted by the control chamber 56 is greater than the overflow chamber 77. The feed bar 33 is of a synthetic plastic material such as methyl methacrylate. Other non- metallic parts of the pen, such as the barrel portions, the collar 30, the plug 36, the plug mounting means 37 and both reservoirs are of suitable synthetic plastic material. Reciprocating piston reservoir.-The reservoir 21, shown in Fig. 16, comprises an axially movable piston 46 with a sealing ring 120, a threaded driving member 105 rotatably mounted on the tubular body of the reservoir, and a threaded connection 114 between the piston and the driving member. A rear barrel portion of the pen is screwed on to the forward barrel portion to enclose the reservoir 21 securely mounted on the tubular connector 41, Fig. 1a (not shown).
