Abstract
885,208. Valves. CORNING GLASS WORKS. July 2, 1958 [July 3, 1957], No. 21205/58. Class 135. A screw-driven stop valve is actuated by a screwed spindle 25, Fig. 1. The closure member 15 is located in a pipe coupling housing 10 and co-operates with a seat 13 in the wall of an angular bore 12 of the housing 10. A yoke member 27, 28 is clamped to a flange 32 mounted on the housing by two pairs of bolts 34, 35 the latter of which also serve to locate a gland member 40, 41, 42, Fig. 3, which compresses a packing 37 against a shoulder 36 of the bore 12. The screwed actuating spindle 25 is carried by the yoke 27 and co-operates with an internally and externally screwed member 22 which passes through a collar 20 adhesively fixed to the hollow closure member 15 which carries an elastic ring 14 of a corrosion-resistant plastic. A compression spring 23 is retained between the collar 20 and a plastic cover 24 which is held in position by a nut 24a. A plastic protecting cover 50 fits over the yoke 27. On rotation of the spindle 25 the friction of the packing 37 prevents rotation of the closure member which thus moves axially towards or away from the seat 13. When the valve is closed a further rotation of the spindle 25 allows the spring 23 to press the closure member on to the seat.
