884,448. Treating polymers; treating cellulose and its derivatives. POLYPLASTIC. Feb. 3, 1958 [Feb. 2, 1957], No. 3455/58. Classes 2(2), 2(5), 2(6) and 70 Polymers are given improved properties by treating them with ozone at a temperature below 130‹ C. and then heat-treating in the absence of oxygen at 20‹-250‹C. Polymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes and substitution products thereof, organic esters of ethylenic alcohols, ethylenic aldehydes and ketones, ethylenic hydrocarbons, ethylenic monocarboxylic acids and ester and halogen derivatives thereof, ethylenic polycarboxylic acids and esters thereof, and halogen substituted olefines; synthetic and natural rubbers; phenol-aldehyde condensation polymers; alkyd resins; polyamides; polyurethanes; silicones; amino-plast resins; and cellulose and its esters and ethers are mentioned as suitable for treatment. The polymer may be in a dry state and for example, shaped as a pipe or tube, or it may be a powder, and the ozonization may be performed in an internal mixer. Alternatively, the polymer may be in solution, emulsion or dispersion, or swollen in a partial solvent. The ozone may be carried in a gaseous stream of air or oxygen, preferably with an ozone content between 0.1 and 8 %. The heat treatment may be carried out in the presence of reducing agents such as oxalic acid, aliphatic and aromatic amines, phenols, alcohols aldehydes and ketones and derivatives thereof, and reducing mineral salts. Examples describe the treatment of polyvinyl chloride as a powder or a fibre, polystyrene, low and high pressure polyethylene, styrene-vinyl chloride graft copolymers in tube form, and polyurethane rubber; the products have improved physical characteristics.
