Abstract

The water imbibition of regenerated cellulose products such as yarns is reduced by subjecting them in the presence of moisture, without external heating, to the action of ammonia gas or the vapour of hydrazine hydrate or of an alkyl primary amine having a molecular weight of not more than 74, and then removing substantially all the absorbed gas or vapour and excess moisture from the products. The treatment is preferably carried out at pressures of 1 to 5 atmospheres absolute and temperatures of -20 DEG to +20 DEG C. The regenerated cellulose products are preferably conditioned to a moisture regain of 25-50 per cent prior to the treatment. After the treatment the absorbed gas or vapour and excess moisture are preferably removed from the products by drying them at a temperature above 50 DEG C. but below that at which damage to the products may occur, but if the less volatile amines are used for the treatment the products may be washed with an organic solvent for the amine before the drying step. The heat evolved when ammonia gas is used for the treatment may be absorbed by providing cooling devices in the treatment vessel and/or by cooling the gas before it comes into contact with the regenerated cellulose. Examples of suitable alkyl amines are methyl-, ethyl-, and iso-propylamine, ethylene diamine and propylene diamine. In an example, a skein of viscose rayon continuous yarn is conditioned over a saturated aqueous solution of zinc sulphate at room temperature for 3 days to a moisture regain of 27.7 per cent and then treated with ammonia gas at an absolute pressure of 60 inches of mercury and at room temperature for one hour. The yarn is then dried at 100 DEG C. for 15 minutes. Specifications 345,989, 486,527, and 683,203 are referred to.
