Abstract

Formaldehyde is polymerized in aqueous solution in the presence of at least as much added formaldehyde polymer as there is of formaldehyde. The formaldehyde may be mixed with the added polymer to form a nonpasty mixture of water content below 30% until polymerization is complete and the mixture dried to give a granular polymer of CH2O content of at least 99%. The formaldehyde solution preferably has a formaldehyde content of 70%, while the quantity of added polymer may be 140% and the temperature of polymerization 20 DEG to 40 DEG C. The process may be carried out continuously, a part of the polymer produced being recycled to fresh formaldehyde solution. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
