Abstract

In subjecting starch to chemical or physical treatments, the starch is treated in a fluidized condition, e.g. the starch is fed into a chamber having a porous base through which gas is driven into the chamber. To render the starch more freely flowing, it may be dried to a moisture content less than normal or it may be mixed with a small proportion of a substance such as silica gel. Examples are concerned with (i) acidifying and drying by treatment under reduced pressure with air and hydrogen chloride gas, followed by treatment at increasing temperatures up to 110 DEG C.; (ii) dextrinizing by such acid air treatment, followed by roasting at 180 DEG C.; (iii) neutralizing such dextrinized starch with an ammonia-air mixture and then moistening the product with humid air; (iv) etherification by treatment with an ethylene oxide-air mixture. Excessive dust formation in the treated product may be avoided by incorporation of a small proportion of a suitable liquid or solid hydrocarbon, e.g., paraffin wax.
