Abstract
In the catalytic reforming of a petroleum naphtha in the presence of hydrogen and a platinum group metal catalyst, the water in the reactor is controlled to maintain the partial pressure of water at the outlet of the reactor not in excess a value of or corresponding to 0.4 mm. Hg. at 200 p.s.i.g. total pressure. The water is controlled by drying the feed to below 15 p.p.m. of water, preferably below 10 p.p.m., and the recycle gas to below 5 p.p.m. The catalyst is also preferably dried before use to a moisture content (compared with catalyst ignited for 48 hours at 1250 DEG C.) of not more than 1.1%. This is effected by passing a dehydrating gas through the catalyst and gradually increasing the temperature to not more than 1000 DEG F. and not more than 20 DEG F. below the deactivating temperature until at 950 DEG F. and a gas rate of 24-240 Sc.F. per minute per barrel of catalyst the partial pressure of water in gas leaving the catalyst is not more than 1-3 mm. Hg. During this treatment the surface area of the catalyst should not be reduced by more than 50%. Specification 891,863 is referred to.
