Abstract

884,110. Printing-surfaces. POLYCHROME CORPORATION. Nov. 19, 1959 [Dec. 29, 1958], No. 39297/59. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XX] A planographic printing plate comprises a metallic base, a hydrophilic coating thereon in the form of a continuous film, hard coating being provided by treatment with an aqueous solution of a zirconium hexahalide, and a light-sensitive diazo coating overlapping said hydrophilic coating. The base is pre-treated with an activating acid (phosphoric, oxalic, chromic, nitric or sulphuric acid), an alkali degreasing agent, an acid etching agent and to a desmutting operation, and hardened with nitric or tartaric acid, or is grained by abrasing or sandblasting. The base is then treated with a zirconium hexahalide solution, e.g. 0À3-1À0% potassium zirconium fluoride at 150‹ F. for 1-3 minutes, or calcium or ammonium zirconium fluoride, and with hot water. A light-sensitive layer is then applied, which may be albumen, aluminium bichromate, or a diazo resin, such as the condensation product of paraformaldehyde and paradiazophenylamine, and the sensitiser is 0À1 % diazo and 0À1% of a 10% solution of saponin. Hydroquinone may be applied as for anti-oxidant before the diazo treatment. Specifications 764,442, 764,443 and 856,993 are referred to.
