New'York Application March 24, 1954, Serial No. 418,440
' v9 Claims. (Cl. 242-68) New York, N. Y., a corporation of web feeding mechanism, and
right angles to the reel axis. Such mechanism for cutting rhombic blanks from web material and for automatically converting such blanks into envelopes. For illusthe invention is disclosed herem as embodied in a machine of the kind illustratively shown planes at in Figs. 1 to 29 of my pendingapplication, Serial No. 344,572, filed March 25, 1953, for Web Feed Envelope Machines.
In that machine, each blank when cut is required to have its shorter diagonal in coincidence with the prescribed central feed line. A flying cutter, adjustable about a vertical pivot, and alsoadjustable bodily in the direction of web feed, is provided, the first ad ustment being designed to cause the line of cut to make a desired oblique :angle with the prescribed central feed line of the cut blanks. A web supply frame carries a reel from which paper is advanced at different selected rates of feed to the flying cutter so that different lengths of web may be fed and cut as desired for making envelopes of different sizes.
It is important that the blanks form the true rhombic trimming, gumming and folding operations which are mechanically performed upon the blanks are all performed on the assumption that the blanks are truly rhombic and are truly centered with reference to the prescribed feed line, and poor quality or defective results will be produced if the blanks are not true. The-machine of this invention is provided'with .means to insure feeding of the web from a reel with its side edges travelling in prescribed for correcting distortion or warping of the To this end, it is a feature that the core on which the lreel paper is wound is mounted with a capacity for shifting or adjusting relative to the reel supporting shaft to correct for warping and distorting of the core of the reel.
'Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear. forming a part of this specification, 1 is a transverse, vertical sectional view, 1-1-of Fig. 2, showing the mechanism for mounting the core on which the paper reel is wound on Figure l the reel shaft;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on line 2-2 10f Fig. 1, showing the web supplying parts of an illustrative machine embodying the present invention;
- Figure 3 is an inner end elevational view of the right hand core supporting cone, looking towards the left end 0f Fig. 1;
Figure '4 is an inner end elevational view of the hub l whichsupports the cone of Fig. 3;
taken or warping of the core 14 ings 28 aligned with Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the clamp plate associated with the cone and hub of Figs. 3 and 4; and
Figure 6 is an inner end elevational view of the left hand core-supporting cone of Fig. l.
The illustrative machine includes a main frame 9, and mechanism carried by it designed to feed a web 10 to and through a flying cutter, not shown, consisting of a stationary knife and a rotary knife, the latter carried by aroller mounted on a shaft. This flying cutter is adjustable to produce lines of cut at various angles oblique to the direction of travel of the we 10.
The frame 9 includes extensions 11 (Fig. 2) in which bearing rollers 12 are mounted for rotatably supporting a reel shaft 13. The shaft 13 supports in a stationary position a core 14 upon which a paper reel 15 is wound. The Web 10 is led upward from the reel past guide rollers 16 and 17 (Fig. 2) and then between stationary feed rollers 18 and 19.
In the practice of the present invention, means are provided for correcting inaccuracies due to the distortion so that the endsof the reel 15 will lie accurately in planes at right angles to the reel axis and include a cylindrical hub 20 secured to the reel shaft 13 by a set screw 21, the hub 20 at the end thereof remote from screws 21 being integrally formed with. a circular'flange plate 22 and a four sided extension 23. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the plate 22 and extension 23 are provided with the central bore 24 aligned with the central bore .of the hub and receive therethrough the reel shaft 13.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a core-supporting cone 25 is integrally formed with a circular base 26 having a central opening 27 receiving therethrough in freely spaced relationship the reel shaft 13 and the extension 23 of hub 20 with the outer face of the base 26 lying flush with the inner face of theflange plate 22. The base plate 26 is provided with four equi-ra'dially spaced circular opencorresponding openings 29 provided in the flange plate 22, the diameter of the openings 29 being greaterthan that of the openings 28 for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear.
As a means of securing the core-supporting cone 25 to the flange plate 22 a circular clamp plate 30 is provided with a central circular opening 31 which receives therethrough in freely spaced relationship the hub 20 with the inner face of the clamp plate 30 lying flush with the outer face of the flange plate 22. The plate 30 is provided with four equi-radially spaced openings 33 aligned with the openings 28 in plate 26. The openings 28 in the base plate 26 are internally threaded and have screwed therein bolts 32 passing through the four equiradially spaced openings 33 in plate 30 and the openings 29 in the flange plate 22, the heads 34 of the bolts engaging the clamp plate 30 on the outer face thereof, as will be obvious. It will be noted that the openings 29 in the flange plate 22 being of greater diameter than the bolts 32 will permit the vertical displacement of the latter and thereby the core supporting cone 25 in a manner which will hereinafter become more clear.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the base plate 26 around its periphery is provided with four equi-radially spaced, inwardly extending internally threaded openings 35 which communicate with the central opening 27 by meansof reduced, smooth bores 36, the bores 35, 36 being displaced radially forty-five degrees from the openings 28. Set screws 37 having reduced shanks 38 which extend into the bores 36 are screwed into each of the internally threaded bores'35. It will be noted that the length of the set screws 37 is slightly less than the length of the bores 35 and that the reduced shanks 38 are slightly greater in the length of the reduced'bores 36. Thus, when the outer end of the set screws 37 coincide with the outer ends of the bores 35, the reduced shanks 38 extend through the inner ends of the bores 36 into contact with the extension 23 and support the cone 2S thereon.
With the right hand assembly just described in assembled position on the right hand end of the reel shaft 13, the core 14 having a bevelled inner end 39 is slid onto the cone 25. 1
The portion of the reel shaft 13, extending through the other reel supporting member 40 is, externally threaded, as at 41, and has screwed thereon an internally threaded hub 42 integrally formed with a circular base plate 43 (Figs. 1 and 5), the base plate 43 being provided with oppositely disposed pairs of openings 44 adapted to receive therein the opposite ends of a spanner Wrench or the like whereby to tighten the hub 42- on shaft 13'. The inner face of the base plate 43 is integrally formed with a hollow cone 45 sirnilar in size and shape to the-cone 25 and Supports thereon the other end of the core 14-.
With the reel mounted on the reel shaft as shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the reel 15 may be then brought accurately into common planes at right angles to the reel axis by adjustment of any or all of the set screws 37, to correct for any distortion or warping of the core 14 prior to the starting of the machine.
To remove the core 14 after the paper reel 15 wound thereon has been completely cut, it is only necessary to unscrew the left hand supporting cone 45 which permits the removal of the core 14 from the cone 25 and shaft 13.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
