Abstract
A metal base such as Al, steel, Zn, Mg, Cr or Cu is treated with an aqueous solution of a potassium titanium hexahalide, preferably K2TiF6 in a concentration of 0.1% to saturation, to form a hydrophilic coating prior to coating with a light-sensitive compound capable of becoming water insoluble and ink receptive upon exposure to light to form a planographic printing plate. The metal base is first alkali degreased, acid etched, desmutted and then activated with phosphoric, chromic, nitric, sulphuric, or oxalic acid. After treatment in the K2TiF6 solution at 90-180 DEG F. the coating is given a hot water rinse and then hardened in a 0.1-5% solution of citric acid or tartaric acid at 50-100 DEG F. The treated base is then coated with a light-sensitive compound such as albumen bichromate or a diazo resin such as the condensation product of paraformaldehyde and paradiazophenylamine or the furfural acetone concentration products or the cinnamyl compound antioxidant such as a 0.01-0.1% aqueous solution of hydroquinone may be added to the hydrophilic layer prior to the diazo treatment.
