Abstract

Solutions for passivating metal surfaces or for aftertreatment of conversion coated surfaces comprise aqueous acidic solutions containing 0.15-800 gms./litre of total chromium (expressed as CrO3) in which 5-60% of the Cr4+ is reduced by formaldehyde which is preferably added in the molar ratio of 0.03 to 1 (HCHO/CrO3. The reduction may be carried out by adding formaldehyde to the chromic acid solution preferably keeping the reaction temperature below 180 DEG F. Phosphoric acid may be added to the treatment solution in an amount of at least 0.05 millilitres of aqueous 75% H3PO4 solution per gram of total chromium. The immersion time is 15 secs. 2 minutes at a temperature of 70-150 DEG F. Treatment of iron, steel, zinc, galvanized iron and aluminium surfaces is referred to as is the aftertreatment of conversion coatings produced by the methods of Specifications 493,365, 501,739, 550,751, 554,654, 632,097, 632,102, 673,677, 708,937, 714,541, 735,819, 737,705, 832,485 and 870,527, and U.S.A. Specifications 2,293,716 and 2,479,423.
