Abstract

[Also in Division G2] In making a lithographic printing plate, a surface of an Al sheet is (a) mechanically grained, (b) anodized to form a hard, dark, steel-greyish, substantially lustreless surface on the sheet, (c) coated with a bonding substance to improve bonding to the sheet surface of a light-sensitive coating, and (d) coated with the light-sensitive coating. The graining of the sheet may be by rubbing with an abrasive, by sand blasting or by wire-brushing. Thereafter, the sheet may be mildly etched in a warm alkaline solution and rinsed. The anodizing may be in H 2 SO 4 solution (of strength 8-22% by weight of acid in water) at 70-75‹ F. using 10-20 volts and a current density of 10-20 amps/sq.ft. The cathode surface can be a lead lined tank or a lead coil which can also serve, along with air agitation to cool the electrolyte. A fibreglass tank can be used. The bonding substance may be alkali silicate, silicic acid, alkali zirconium fluoride or hydrofluozirconic acid. Specified groups of light-sensitive compounds and compositions that may be used are:- tannable colloids that contain a dichromate sensitizer; photo-polymerizable materials that are polymerized by photo-initiators; diazo compounds; aromatic diazido compounds; acenaphthenes; sulfanilido-methylene-fluorenes; S- alkylthiodiarylamine perchlorates, iodonitrothiophenes; and nitronaphthalenes. Examples are given of materials falling within some of these groups.
