Abstract

Emulsifiers for water-in-oil emulsion drilling fluids and anti-static additives for hydrocarbon fuels of the low vapour pressure wide cut gasoline type are prepared by acylating with an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monocarboxylic acid a polyhydroxyamino ether of formula <FORM:0883861/III/1> where R is a hydroxyl-free radical of a polyhydric alcohol free of carbonyl groups or structures hydrolysable to carbonyl groups; x is an integer of at least 3; n is an integer of 1 to x; and B is -NHR1, -NE.CyH2yNE2, -NECyH2y,NE,-CyH2yNE2 <FORM:0883861/III/2> <FORM:0883861/III/3> <FORM:0883861/III/4> wherein R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl or polyhydroxyalkyl group, y is 2 or 3, and each E is hydrogen or a hydroxyalkyl group containing 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms, at least one E being hydrogen. The molar ratio of carboxyl to total nitrogen in the amino ether is 0,75-6, and either at least one of the acyl groups introduced, or the radical R1 when present, contains 12-22 carbon atoms (see Group IV(b)). A specified drilling fluid emulsion contains saturated salt water, fuel oil, bentonite, and emulsifiers. A specified fuel is JP-4 fuel for jet engines. The emulsifiers are also stated to be of use as corrosion inhibitors, particularly for brine solutions containing hydrogen sulphide.ALSO:Surface active agents are prepared by acylating a polyhydroxyamino ether of formula <FORM:0883861/IV (b)/1> where R is a hydroxyl-free radical of a polyhydric alcohol free of carbonyl groups or structures hydrolysable to carbonyl groups; x is an integer of at least 3; n is an integer of 1 to x; and B is -NHR1, -NE-CyH2yNE2, -NE-CyH2y NECyH2yNE2, <FORM:0883861/IV (b)/2> or <FORM:0883861/IV (b)/3> wherein R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl or polyhydroxyalkyl group, y is 2 or 3, and each E is hydrogen or a hydroxyalkyl group containing 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms, at least one E being hydrogen, the acylating agent being an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monocarboxylic acid, the molar ratio of carboxyl to total nitrogen in the amino ether being from 0.75 to 6, and either at least one acyl group introduced by the acylation, or the radical R1 when present, containing 12-22 carbon atoms. The polyhydroxyamino ethers are those of Specification 871,525. Specified acids are lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic oleic, linoleic, linolenic, ricinoleic, 12-hydroxystearic and erucic acids, fatty acid mixtures derived from animal and vegetable fats and oils, tall oil, naphthenic acids, and acids obtained by the oxidation of petroleum fractions; or, when R1 is a C12-22 radical, the acylating acid may be a short chain acid such as acetic. The products are used as fuel additives and emulsifiers (see Group III).
