Abstract

Stable water-in-oil emulsions suitable for use as lubricants and hydraulic fluids comprise 1-80 parts (by weight) of water, 20-99 parts of oil, 0.2-10 parts per 100 parts of emulsion of an ester derived from a substantially saturated (i.e. having no more than 5% unsaturated bonds) hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid having at least 50 aliphatic carbon atoms in the substituent and a "polyhydric alcohol" (see below), and 0.1-5 parts per 100 parts of emulsion of an alkaline earth metal salt of a fatty acid having at least 12 aliphatic carbon atoms in the fatty radical, said metal salt having a metal ratio of at least 1. The term "polyhydric alcohol" includes acylated derivatives of polyhydric alcohols having at least one -OH group free for reaction with the succinic acid. The oil may be a mineral oil, or a mixture of different oils such as mineral oil, vegetable oil, animal oil, silicon-containing oils, polyolefin oils, and polyester oils. Many other additives may optionally be present, the disclosure of such additives being similar to that in Specification 1,009,197. Oil concentrates from which the emulsions may be prepared are described. Specifications 1,055,337 and 1,059,847 are also referred to.ALSO:Calcium or barium salts of fatty acids having at least 12 aliphatic carbon atoms, said salts being basic with metal ratios of from 2.4 to 15.8 are prepared (Examples Q-Y) by neutralizing the acid with the appropriate base in mineral oil solution in the presence of a phenolic or alcoholic promoter, followed by treatment with CO2.ALSO:Polyisobutylene - substituted succinic acid esters are prepared by reacting the anhydride with the following alcohols:-sorbitan tristearate (Example C), polyoxyethylene sorbitan tristearate (Example D), polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate (Example J), and sorbitan mono-oleate (Example K). Other similar preparations are repetitive of those in Specifications 1,009,197 and 1,059,847.
