Abstract
A petroleum fuel oil composition contains 0.001 to 0.1 per cent of at least one N-alkyl alkylene polyamine having 16 to 20 carbon atoms in the N-alkyl group, which may be substituted, and having at least one primary amino-nitrogen atom. The composition may also include a carboxylic acid salt of such a polyamine. The oil may be a heating oil boiling between 375 DEG F. and 750 DEG F., and may be a virgin oil or a cracked oil (thermally or catalytically cracked) or a blend comprising virgin and/or cracked oils. The polyamine may have the formula: <FORM:0793448/III/1> where R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl (i.e. by hydroxy, carboxy, nitro, or halo groups) radical having 16 to 20 carbon atoms; R1 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical; R11 is hydrogen, an alkylene primary amino radical (i.e.-(CH2)xNH2, where x is 1 to 10), or a polyalkylene polyamino radical containing a primary amino nitrogen atom; m is 1 to 10; and n is 0 to 10. Examples of polyamine are N-octadecyl-ethylene diamine, N-octadecyl diethylene triamine, N-cetyl-propylene diamine, N-octadecyl triethylene tetramine, N-hydroxy-octadecyl diethylene triamine, N-chloro-cetyl-ethylenediamine, N-bromo octadecyl ethylene diamine, and "Duomeens" (Registered Trade Mark) which have the formula RNHCH2 CH2CH2NH2, where R is derived from tallow fatty acid or soya fatty acid. The salts which may also be added are those of the polyamine with aliphatic carboxylic acids having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, e.g. hexanoic, nonanoic, lauric, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic and palmitic acids. A concentrated solution of the additives in a hydrocarbon oil may be prepared and then added to a heating oil to obtain the final composition. The composition preferably also contains an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphonate, preferably a barium sulphonate, obtained from an aromatic or naphthenic sulphonic acid; the preferred sulphonates are barium salts of sulphonic acids obtained from petroleum hydrocarbon fractions, i.e. mahogany acids.
