Abstract

1415638 Lubricants; fuels EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 17 May 1974 [29 May 1973] 22086/74 Headings C5F and C5G [Also in Division C7] An anti-rust lubricant composition comprises (a) at least one salt formed between an aliphatic C 6-20 carboxylic acid and an alkanolamine (b) at least one salt formed between an aromatic #C 20 carboxylic acid and an alkanolamine, the weight ratio (as free acid) aromatic: aliphatic acid being 0À1 : 1 to 10 : 1 and (c) at least one alkanolamine in the free state so that there are 1À5-3 equivalents of total alkanolamine present per equivalent of total acid, the alkanolamines having #20 C atoms and formula RNXY where R=hydroxyalkyl and X, Y = H, alkyl, or hydroxyalkyl. An emulsifiable composition may contain the above, plus an emulsifying agent, e.g. a Na alkylbenzene sulphonate, with or without a solubilizing agent. An emulsifiable lubricating oil for metal working comprises a major proportion of mineral oil of viscosity 10-200 cS at 50‹ C., 10-30 wt. per cent emulsifiers, and 1-5% of the above composition; a metal working lubricant comprises 1-50 vol. per cent of said oil emulsified in water, and has reduced corrosion tendencies in contact with ferrous metal. Suitable aliphatic acids are caprylic, decanoic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, linoleic, linolenic, oleic, undecylenic and tall oil acids; suitable aromatic acids are benzoic and naphthoic; the ring may be hydroxy, amino, amido, nitro, alkoxy, or alkyl-substituted. Suitable alkanolamines and mixtures are listed; said emulsifier may be Na alkylbenzene sulphonate, Na alkyl sulphate, Na fatty acid salt, Na colophony salt, or resinic acid; said oil may contain up to 5% extreme pressure lubricant, and up to 3% bactericide, e.g. a quaternary NH 4 salt. The anti-rust composition may also be added to hydrocarbon fuels or lubricant greases.
