Abstract
An anti-detonant fuel comprises an aqueous alcohol solution containing 10-90 per cent of a monohydric alcohol having 1-5 carbon atoms and 90-10 per cent water, and a lesser amount of a mixture of a light liquid hydrocarbon and a heavier water-soluble corrosion-inhibiting emulsifier, containing petroleum sulphonates, the specified gravity of this mixture being the same as that of the aqueous alcohol solution. The fuel may be injected into an internal combustion engine for admixture with the main fuel. Mono-hydric alcohols mentioned are methanol, ethanol and isopropanol. The petroleum sulphonates are preferably the petroleum sodium sulphonates of the green acid type; emulsifiers referred to are fatty acid soaps, for example sodium, or potassium salts of oleic, stearic, linoleic and ricinoleic acids, and rosin soaps such as sodium and potassium abietates, the soaps containing free glycerine or glycols such as diethylene glycol. The light liquid hydrocarbon should be of similar specific gravity to kerosene. Tetraethyl lead containing ethylene dibromide and dichloride may be added to the fuel.
