Abstract
883,171. Two-part couplings. PYE, R. L. Oct. 27, 1959 [July 1, 1959], No. 22508/59. Class 38(1). A plug which can be used with various two- or three-pin sockets comprises a carrier member 4 rotatably mounted within a plug easing having a set of holes 11, 12 through which any one of several sets of plug pins A-F, slidably mounted in the carrier member, may project. Fig. 4 shows pins A,A,A<SP>1</SP> of one set projecting through pin exit holes 11, 12 in the bottom wall 2 of a plug casing 1 and enegaged at their inner ends by flat contacts 19, 20, 21 resiliently mounted on a removable fuse and contact carrier 13. Two wires of a three-wire cable 22 passing into the carrier 13 are connected to terminal blocks 23, 124 of contacts 19, 20 and the third wire is connected to contact 21 through terminal block 24 and fuse 18. When a two-pin set is used a separate earth connection may be made to the earth terminal 124 by means of a socket 36 in the casing cover 3. To obtain a different pin set, the carrier 13 is removed, the plug is inverted so that the projecting pins fall back into the casing and the carrier 4 is rotated by its knurled periphery to bring the desired pin set into register with holes 11, 12. The plug is then righted to let the pins project, the carrier 13 is replaced, and a locking pin 29, Fig. 2 (not shown), is inserted to maintain the carrier in position and the pins rigid in use.
