Abstract
882,927. Railway tank wagons. STORAGE & TRANSPORT SYSTEM Ltd. Jan. 22, 1958 [July 10, 1957], No. 21948/57. Class 103(4). A railway tank wagon has a rectangular underframe including solebars 1, Fig. 2, joined by end members and intermediate cross-members 8, and a cylindrical tank 6 connected to the solebars, through longitudinal side plates 7 and to the cross members 8 by welding, so that the lowest part of the tank 6 lies below the upper surface of the solebars 1. The truck thus virtually forms part of the underframe. The cross members 8 each comprise a vertical plate 9, Fig. 4, the lower edge of which is strengthened by a flange 10 whilst the upper edge, which engages the tank, is strengthened by angle irons 11, 12 welded to the plate 9, the angle iron 11 also being welded to the tank 6. The plates 7 are welded to T-section longitudinal bars 15 in turn welded to the tank, the ends of the bars being curved to facilitate their securement to the domed ends of the tank. The exterior of the tank may be stiffened by one or more rings.
