Abstract
882,507. Cutting machines. POLKEY, E. H. June 28, 1960 [March 31, 1959], No. 10839/59. Class 31 (1). In a machine for producing elastic bands, of the kind comprising a vertical knife 2 reciprocable vertically relatively to a horizontal knife 4 and feed rollers 5, 6 operable in timed relation with the reciprocations of the knife 2 for progressively and intermittently feeding a flattened elastic tube T between the knives, the knife 4 is mounted on a slide 3 which is spring-biased towards the knife 2 so as to maintain the knife edges in contact, under pressure, during each cutting action to sever a band from the tube, and means are provided, operable in timed relation with a reciprocable carriage 1 for the knife 2, for pushing the slide back against the spring action and thereby relieving the pressure between the knife edges at times when these are not required to cooperate. The slide 3 is biased towards the knife 2 by means of a pair of manually-adjustable compression springs 24 and is adjustable by means of manually-operable screw means 32a. The slide is pushed back against the springs 24 by means of a vertical tapered cambar 35 mounted on the carriage and a cooperating roller 36 provided on the slide. The cam-bar is pivotally mounted at its upper end relative to a carrier plate 38 and is pivotally adjustable by means of manually-operable screw means 41, 42 acting in conjunction with a spring 46. The plate 38 is adjustable by manually-operable screw means 47, 48. Alternatively, the cam-bar may be mounted on the slide and the roller on the carriage. A carrier 17 for the slide is angularly adjustable to enable the cutting edge 4a of the knife 4 to be set at the required shearing angle. The carriage 1 is operated from a crank-shaft 7 through a connecting rod 55. Means are provided for guiding the tube T between the knives and holding it down upon the top of the knife 4 prior to each cutting action.
