Abstract

882,236. Key-operated locks. PARKES & SONS Ltd., JOSIAH, and BUTTER, F. J. May 16, 1960 [June 2, 1959], No. 18749/59. Class 44. In a lock of the type in which pivoted security levers require to be lifted by respective correct amounts in order to release the bolt for direct or indirect operation by the key each lever is lifted by a key-operated member which is guided for substantially rectilinear movement and when operated by a step of any particular key imparts the same lift to its associated lever irrespective of the direction in which the key is turned. In the lock of Fig. 1 the bolt 11 is withdrawn by turning a key such that each lever 17 is raised by a vertically moving guided member 19 the apex of which engages and raises the underside 23 of the lever. Actuation by a servant key aligns a notch 25 in the lever with a nosepiece 27 on a spring-loaded bell-crank lever 28 so allowing the bolt to be withdrawn by abutment of the rotating key against a surface 15 of the bolt and in doing so swing the nose into the notch through the interengagement of protuberances 30, 31. Actuation by a master key aligns a notch 26 in the lever 17 with the nose-piece 27. In the lock of Fig. 2 the member 19 lifts the lever 17 through inter-engagement of surfaces 35, 36 the levers 17 and 28 being respectively vertically and horizontally disposed. In the lock of Fig. 3 not shown) the lever 28 is below the bolt whilst the upper part of the member 19 abuts the rear end of the lever 17 which is horizontal and fulcrumed intermediate its ends. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a lock in which the bolt is moved by a member intermediate the key and bolt whilst in yet another lock the member 19 is constrained to move in a guide 45, Fig. 7, and the bolt 11 is slidably actuated through the intermediary of a slidable member 43 and a pivoted bracket 42. Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) illustrate locks in which the member 19 is constrained for vertical movement by arrangements respectively comprising one and two guide checks. A lock construction is described without a master and servant key arrangement the lever 17, Fig. 5, comprising a H-gate co-operating with a member 42 attached to the bolt.
