A platform 14 for a typewriter or other machine is raised by a lever 3 on opening a desk lid 1, slides or rollers 19 on the platform run on inclined tracks 13 on the sides of the desk well and are grooved or otherwise interlockingly engaged with the tracks to prevent lateral displacement. A roller 10 on the lever 3 enters a recess 18 in the cam surface 16 to hold the platform in raised position and a counterbalancing spring 11 may be provided.
