Abstract

<PICT:0881812/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0881812/IV (c)/2> A heated, moist, freshly crimped and compacted filamentary tow is conducted through a predetermined space, as may be defined by an enclosed and elongated "shoot", wherein a gaseous medium (which may be heated) is passed through the tow to set the crimp therein. As shown, tow 11 is fed continuously by rolls 13, 14, into a compression chamber 16 and is guided therefrom by a chute 18 to a receptacle 17. Air preheated by fins 36 of heaters 34 in a duct 31 is drawn into and exhausted from chute 18 through aligned openings 22 and 23 having louvres 24: the air passes through the advancing tow, maintaining clearance therefor, as at 28, and is withdrawn through a duct 32 leading to a fan 37.
