Abstract

916,728. Crimping fibres. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. April 18, 1961 [May 23, 1960], No. 14023/61. Class 120 (3). Apparatus for crimping filmentary tow comprises a discharge shoot which is utilized to provide uniform back pressure for forming crimps. The tow is received by an upwardly extending arcuate section, and transferred to a horizontal section, of the shoot through an apertured floor of which air is drawn to hold the tow thereagainst. In the apparatus show, rolls 11 crimp a heated tow 12 and force it down a stuffing- box 13 at high velocity. The crimped mass 17 is received on the floor of a shoot 14 and its continued, enforced progress thereover is retarded (so that back pressure is accumulated and maintained) as a result of the tow being held on the floor by air (which also cools and sets the tow) withdrawn through apertures 19, manifold 18, baffled chamber 22 and past an adjustable damper 26 in a duct 21, by a fan 20.
