Abstract

A fabric is wound with an interleaving cotton material onto a perforated cylinder 4 (Fig. 1, not shown) and then placed in a pressure chamber 3 (Fig. 4, not shown) to receive a steam finishing treatment. The arrangement is such that steam can be passed to the centre of the fabric roll and forced through the roll to an on to portion of the chamber; steam may alternatively be forced through the fabric in the opposite direction. In operation the chamber is preheated by high pressure steam being injected into a surrounding chamber 11. Next steam is passed to the core of the fabric roll or the portion of the chamber surrounding it to cause the air therein, which has become heated, to pass through the fabric and so dehydrate it. This air is exhausted to the atmosphere, via a cock. When pure steam issues from the cock it is closed and the pressure of the steam in the chamber raised, e.g. upto two atmospheres above atmospheric. When the steam treatment is finished the roll is returned to the winding apparatus to be unwound. As this is done air is drawn through to the interior of the roll to cool and dry it. Before the roll is placed in the steam chamber it may be given a pre-drying, e.g. by flowing hot air through it during winding. Means whereby the roll is wound, unwound and conveyed to and from the steam chamber are also described.
