Abstract
879,817. Tubulous furnace walls. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. July 11, 1960 [July 10, 1959], No. 23738/59. Class 51 (1). The walls of the upper part 22 of the hopper bottom of a vapour generator furnace lined with horizontal tubes all slope downwardly and inwardly at the same inclination, and in the lower part the front wall slopes outwardly at the same inclination, the rear wall continues downwardly and inwardly before sloping outwards and the side walls continue vertically downwards. The upper part 22 of each wall of the hopper bottom is lined by contiguous tubes 20, connected by tubes 40 perpendicular to the wall to a collector 32. The lower part 25 of the front and rear walls are lined by finned tubes 20 spaced apart so that horizontal tubes 36 leading from a distributer 30 can be arranged in contact. The lower part of the side walls are lined by contiguous tubes. Groups of tubes may form sinuous panels, or each tube may extend half-way round the hopper bottom, Fig. 4. In this embodiment the connections between a distributer 56 and tubes in the lower part of the hopper bottom are horizontal, and horizontal tubes connect the tubes in the lower part to vertical tubes 58, 60, connected by tubes 59, 61, perpendicular to the plane of the wall of the upper part to corresponding tubes in the upper part of the hopper bottom. These tubes are connected to an upper collector 66 by tubes 62, 64, perpendicular to the hopper bottom wall. In a modification, Fig. 6, horizontal tubes connect the tubes 78, 82 forming the end loops of a sinuous tube group with vertical tubes, alternate vertical tubes leaving or entering opposite sides of a distributer 74 or collector 84 respectively. The arrangements enable all the horizontal tubes forming the hopper bottom walls to be drained through drainable distributers or collectors, and the use of finned tubes or studded tubes with refractory packing is avoided over the greater part of the hopper bottom walls.
